  • Familiarity can scale, but it has to scale well. Shoe-be-do effectively leveraged its flat management structure, allowing it to compete well against more established players and giving employees room to innovate. But as the company grew larger to cope with increasing corporate demand, it became increasingly bogged down by more inefficient bureaucracy and a different organizational climate. This led to misunderstandings between older and newer employees and a slowdown in employee growth.
  • Scale should lead to balance. A major concern with Shoe-be-do’s employees is that despite the company’s expansion, it didn’t translate either to a decreased workload or to an increase in benefits. Employees still feel busier than ever with little expectation of reward or development, and as a result there’s no employee motivation. Sometimes, ideas were even thrown out the window by managers who were unable to keep up.
