From software that allowed you to virtually fit shoes to conquering the fashion world by storm, Karl Bell and Shoe-be-do found that sweet spot between technology and fashion that has evaded companies for so long. With significant demand for the products they’ve built across different parts of the fashion industry, they were able to snag important contracts with big fashion companies, quickly growing in the process.
There is nothing wrong with growing fast. In fact, for many companies it’s a dream to grow fast while doing what you love the most, which for the Shoe-be-do team was finding how to best combine two very different fields together. But growing is never easy, and bringing in both the right people and the right employee culture that could make the best use of that growth isn’t always easy to come by. Problems can arise, which is why Happy Team Check was able to help Karl figure out how he could improve his company to help keep its competitive edge.
Using our employee satisfaction survey platform, Karl was equipped with tools to better figure out what was going on at Shoe-be-do. What did he find?
- Familiarity can scale, but it has to scale well. Shoe-be-do effectively leveraged its flat management structure, allowing it to compete well against more established players and giving employees room to innovate. But as the company grew larger to cope with increasing corporate demand, it became increasingly bogged down by more inefficient bureaucracy and a different organizational climate. This led to misunderstandings between older and newer employees and a slowdown in employee growth.
- Scale should lead to balance. A major concern with Shoe-be-do’s employees is that despite the company’s expansion, it didn’t translate either to a decreased workload or to an increase in benefits. Employees still feel busier than ever with little expectation of reward or development, and as a result there’s no employee motivation. Sometimes, ideas were even thrown out the window by managers who were unable to keep up.
Expansion is good, but when things go wrong, you need to quickly pinpoint what the issues are. With the data gathered using Happy Team Check, Karl and Shoe-be-do can benefit better from making tough decisions that can boost team morale, optimize employee growth, and, especially in flat organizations, increase organizational flexibility. In a fast-paced industry, time is very valuable, and fixing issues fast is of critical importance. This is why knowing what’s going on in your organization is very important.
It isn’t easy to find warning signs in any corporation, and we’re here to make it easier for you and your employees to better give feedback so that you can better make those critical decisions. After all, it’s your company that’s on the line.
This is the power of data. This is what Happy Team Check can do for you.
